Here's my secret:

There's a PS2 game called "Buzz: The Mega Quiz" that comes with 4 USB buzzers. They all connect in one USB port. If you plug them into a Windows machine, it will detect them as a 20-button game controller. There's an application called "JoyToKey" that will convert that into regular keypresses (meaning that while you're running that application, pressing the buzzer buttons is equivalent to pressing keys on a keyboard.) You can assign whatever key you want to each button.

With that, you can have a Flash (or even JavaScript) app respond to those keypresses. The buzzers aren't the highest quality, but should hold up fairly well.
